Maharashtra Board Syllabus for Class 12 2020

What this Class 12 syllabus page holds

Two year cards sit at the top: 2020 with 52 files and 2021 with 10 files. Under those, subjects run from the core HSC books to languages and vocational courses. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English, Hindi, History, Geography and Economics have files in both years. Many optional subjects have a single file.

A card that says "0 years" still has a syllabus file. Art, Commerce and Management, Design, Music, Secretarial Practice, Sindhi, Textiles, Urdu and Vocational Education are filed that way. Open the subject name. Don't skip it because the year count is zero.

The syllabus follows your stream

Every student has English, a second language, Environment Education and Water Security, and Health and Physical Education. Environment Education and Health and Physical Education are graded. The HSC percentage is calculated on the subjects that carry marks, and you still have to complete the graded ones.

StreamCore syllabus on this pageTheory paper
SciencePhysics, Chemistry, Biology, MathematicsPhysics, Chemistry and Biology are 70-mark theory papers, with practicals making up the rest. Maths is an 80-mark theory paper.
CommerceBookkeeping, Secretarial Practice, Economics, Mathematics, Commerce and ManagementMost of these are 80-mark theory papers. The rest of the 100 is internal, oral or project work.
ArtsHistory, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Logic, Economics80-mark theory papers for the main subjects, with internal marks alongside.
LanguagesEnglish, Marathi, Hindi, and many others from Arabic to UrduLanguage papers follow the prescribed prose, poetry and writing skills.

Bookkeeping on this page is the accountancy syllabus. Commerce and Management is filed separately from Secretarial Practice. Mathematics and the Commerce maths course are not the same book. Open the file that matches the title printed on your textbook.

Science: where the theory marks sit

Physics, Chemistry and Biology each have a 70-mark theory paper. The weightage below is from SCERT's Std 12 booklets. "With option" includes the choice questions.

Physics, 16 chapters. The first four chapters are Rotational Dynamics, Mechanical Properties of Fluids, Kinetic Theory of Gases and Radiation, and Thermodynamics. Each is 5 marks (7 with option), so the opening of the book is 20 of the 70 marks. Later chapters are mostly 4 marks: Oscillations, Superposition of Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Fields, Magnetic Materials, AC Circuits, Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter, Structure of Atoms and Nuclei, and Semiconductor Devices. Wave Optics and Electromagnetic Induction are 5 marks each.

Chemistry is 16 chapters in three blocks. Physical chemistry is about 26 marks: Solid State, Solutions, Ionic Equilibria, Chemical Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics. Thermodynamics is the heaviest single chapter in that block. Inorganic is about 17 marks: Groups 16, 17 and 18, transition elements, and coordination compounds. Organic chemistry is the rest of the paper, from halogen derivatives through to biomolecules. Don't leave organic for the last month. It is too many named reactions to memorise in a week.

Biology is the botany and zoology set in the current textbook. Use the Biology syllabus file on this page for the unit list, and revise diagrams as you go. A 70-mark paper always asks for labelled diagrams, and a diagram you have only read about is slow to draw in the hall.

Mathematics for Arts and Science is not the Commerce mathematics syllabus. The Arts and Science course covers logic, matrices, trigonometry, lines and planes, vectors, linear programming, calculus and probability distributions. The Commerce course shares some of that at a lighter level and adds commercial maths, insurance, index numbers and related topics. Check the file name before you plan the year.

Commerce and Arts subjects filed here

  • Commerce: Bookkeeping, Secretarial Practice, Economics, Commerce and Management, Co-operation, and Mathematics. Organisation of commerce topics may appear under Commerce and Management. Match the file to your college subject name.
  • Arts: History, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Logic, Economics, Education, and Child Development. History has more than one file. Open both years if you want to compare them.
  • Graded and general: Environmental Education, General Knowledge, and Defence Studies are on this page. Environmental Education is the graded subject every stream completes.

Languages, arts and vocational files

Language syllabi on this page include English, Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Pali, Ardhamagadhi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Bengali, French, German, Japanese and Russian. Take only the languages on your admission form.

Art, Art and Design, Art History, Drawing, Music and Design are separate files. Vocational and applied subjects include Information Technology (the largest optional set, 6 files), Stenography, Textiles, Agriculture, Animal Science, Geology and Vocational Education. Bifocal and vocational courses follow the board's vocational syllabus. If your college has given you a different book list, use the college list and treat these files as the board outline.

How to use the files

  1. Write down the subjects on your Std 11 marksheet. Std 12 does not let you swap a stream subject in the exam year.
  2. Open each subject once and copy the unit list into a notebook. That list is your checklist for the year.
  3. For Physics, front-load the first four chapters. They are 20 marks and they are the base for later numericals.
  4. For Commerce, keep one running format notebook: journal, ledger, final accounts, partnership, and not-for-profit. The syllabus tests the format, not only the idea.
  5. If the 2020 file and the 2021 file for the same subject differ, follow the one that matches your current textbook's contents page, and ask the subject teacher which is in force.
