Maharashtra Board Syllabus for Class 10

The Std 10 syllabus is the SSC syllabus. The board exam in early 2027 is set on the current textbooks, the ones brought in from 2018-19, and no reduction has been announced for this year. Maths, Science and Social Science are each two written papers. Languages are one paper each. This page files the syllabus documents we hold by year and by subject, including English, Marathi, Hindi, Mathematics, Science, History and Political Science, Geography and several other languages. Open a subject below to see every syllabus file for it, or open a year to see that year's set together.

What this Class 10 syllabus page holds

The files above are grouped in two ways. The year cards are 2021 (9 files) and 2020 (5 files). The subject cards cover the SSC subjects we have a syllabus file for: English, Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Pali, Mathematics, Science, History, History and Political Science, Geography, Social Science, Agriculture and Computer Science. A subject with "0 years" still has a file. It just isn't tied to one of those two year folders. Open the subject anyway.

These files are the syllabus, not the textbook and not a question paper. Use them to see the unit list, then read that unit in the Balbharati book. A chapter that is in the textbook and missing from an older syllabus file should be checked against the current book before you drop it.

How the SSC syllabus is examined

Most subjects are marked out of 100. You need 35 out of 100 to pass a subject. The written board paper and the school internal assessment are added together.

SubjectWritten board papersInternalTotal
MathematicsAlgebra 40 + Geometry 4020100
Science and TechnologyPart 1 40 + Part 2 4020 practical100
Social SciencesHistory and Political Science 40 + Geography 4020100
Each languageOne 80-mark paper20 oral or internal100

Health and Physical Education, and Water Security or Defence Studies, are graded in school. They are part of the course, but they are not part of the 100-mark percentage in the same way.

Mathematics: two papers, thirteen chapters

Algebra and Geometry are separate sittings. The chapter list matches the current textbooks.

Part 1: AlgebraPart 2: Geometry
1. Linear Equations in Two Variables1. Similarity
2. Quadratic Equations2. Pythagoras Theorem
3. Arithmetic Progression3. Circle
4. Financial Planning4. Geometric Constructions
5. Probability5. Co-ordinate Geometry
6. Statistics6. Trigonometry
7. Mensuration

Financial Planning is examined like any other chapter. It covers GST, shares, mutual funds and SIPs. Students who leave it for the last week usually lose an easy set of marks. Geometry constructions need practice on paper, not only reading. Similarity and Pythagoras assume the triangle work from Std 9 is already in place.

Science and Technology: where the marks sit

Part 1 is physics and chemistry. Part 2 is biology, environment and applied science. Each paper is 40 marks. The figures below are the chapter's share of that paper, from SCERT's Std 10 booklets. "With option" counts the extra choice questions, so those columns total 60.

Part 1 chapterMarksWith optionPart 2 chapterMarksWith option
Gravitation35Heredity and Evolution35
Periodic Classification of Elements46Life Processes Part 146
Chemical Reactions and Equations46Life Processes Part 257
Effects of Electric Current57Environmental Management57
Heat35Towards Green Energy46
Refraction of Light57Animal Classification46
Lenses46Introduction to Microbiology46
Metallurgy46Cell Biology and Biotechnology46
Carbon Compounds57Social Health46
Space Missions35Disaster Management35

No chapter is worth more than 5 marks, so skipping a short one such as Space Missions or Gravitation still costs a question. In Part 1, Effects of Electric Current, Refraction of Light and Carbon Compounds are the heaviest, so start those early. In Part 2, Life Processes Part 2 and Environmental Management carry the most.

History, Political Science and Geography

Social Science is two papers, not one. History and Political Science share a paper. Geography is its own paper, and the course compares India with Brazil, so maps and data run through the book.

  • History: Historiography in the West and in India, Applied History, Indian Arts, Mass Media, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism, Heritage Management.
  • Political Science: Working of the Constitution, the Electoral Process, Political Parties, Social and Political Movements, Challenges faced by Indian Democracy.
  • Geography: Field Visit, Location and Extent, Physiography and Drainage, Climate, Natural Vegetation and Wildlife, Population, Human Settlements, Economy and Occupations, Tourism, Transport and Communication.

On this page, History, History and Political Science, Geography and Social Science are filed as separate subjects. Open the name that matches the file you need. Civics content for Std 10 sits inside Political Science.

Languages on this page

English, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit and Urdu have more than one file. Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu and Pali are here too. A language syllabus follows the prose, poetry and grammar of the prescribed textbook, plus writing skills. Match the file to the language you actually take at school. A first-language paper and a second-language paper for the same language are not the same syllabus.

Agriculture and Computer Science are optional or school-offered subjects. Open them only if they are on your school's subject list.

How to turn this syllabus into a checklist

  1. Write the chapter list for each of your papers on one page. Use the tables above for Maths, Science and Social Science, and the syllabus file for each language.
  2. Mark each chapter as not started, read once, or revised. Do this in June, not in January.
  3. For Science, copy the marks column next to the chapter. Revise 5-mark chapters first when time is short, but don't drop the 3-mark ones.
  4. Keep the internal 20 marks in view. Practicals, orals and projects are part of the 35 you need to pass.
  5. If a syllabus PDF and your current textbook disagree on a chapter, follow the textbook your school is using this year and ask the teacher which file is current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Std 10 syllabus reduced for 2026-27?

No reduction has been announced. The SSC exam follows the current textbooks. Plan for the full chapter list.

Are Algebra and Geometry one paper?

No. They are two 40-mark papers, usually on different days. Each has its own chapter list.

Which year folder should I open?

Open the subject first if you want every file for that subject. Open 2021 or 2020 if you want to compare the set from that folder. The exam itself follows the current textbook, not the older of the two PDFs.

Do graded subjects count in the percentage?

Health and Physical Education and Water Security or Defence Studies are graded in school. They still have to be completed. The 100-mark subjects are the ones in the table above.
