Maharashtra Board Books for Class 9: Building the Base for the SSC

Std 9 has no board exam, which is exactly why it gets underestimated. The Balbharati books for this year are where Mathematics first splits into two books, where Civics becomes Political Science, and where most of the chapters that the SSC builds on first appear. A typical Std 9 set has Maths Part I and Part II, one Science and Technology book, History and Political Science, Geography and your language books. 2026-27 is the final year of these books, with new ones scheduled for 2027-28. Here's what each book covers and what it prepares you for in Std 10.

Subjects and books for Class 9

Why Std 9 matters more than it looks

Ask a Std 10 student which chapters give them trouble and you'll often hear Similarity, Trigonometry, Carbon Compounds or Lenses. Ask a teacher why, and the answer usually goes back a year. The Std 10 books assume you're comfortable with triangles, polynomials, reflection of light and the basic chemistry of carbon, and those come from Std 9. Std 10 rarely re-teaches them. The Std 10 Mensuration chapter, for example, opens by saying that last year you studied surface area and volume, and moves straight on.

So the useful way to think about the Std 9 books is as the first half of a two-year course. There's no board paper at the end of this year, but most of what the board paper tests in Std 10 is built on these chapters.

There's a practical reason too. Std 9 marks don't go on the SSC certificate, so students relax and the gaps stay hidden. Those gaps come out in the first month of Std 10, when the syllabus is moving fast and nobody is going back. A gap in Std 9 costs a weekend to fix. The same gap in Std 10 costs much more, at a time when everything is under pressure.

The Std 9 book list

Here is what a typical student carries. Page counts are from the official Balbharati PDFs (covers included), so read them as a rough guide to size.

Core subjects

  • Mathematics Part I: 7 chapters, about 148 PDF pages.
  • Mathematics Part II: 9 chapters, about 140 PDF pages.
  • Science and Technology: one book, 18 chapters, about 228 PDF pages. It's the heaviest book of the year.
  • History and Political Science: 10 history chapters and 6 political science chapters, about 108 PDF pages.
  • Geography: 12 chapters and a glossary, about 116 PDF pages.

Language books

  • First language: Kumarbharati in your medium, such as English Kumarbharati (about 132 PDF pages) or Marathi Kumarbharati.
  • Marathi as a second or third language: Aksharbharati, or Antarbharati.
  • Hindi: Lokbharati (full course) or Lokvani (composite option).
  • Sanskrit: Sanskritam Amod (full) or Sanskritam Anand (composite).
  • Other titles on our Std 9 list: Gujarati Garvi and Sahitya Bharati, Sindhi Sindhubharati and Nasimul Adab, Kannada Sugambharati, Telugu Saralbharati, Urdu Tarufe and Baag-e-Urdu, Persian Barga-e-Farsi, Pali Kusumavali, German (Deutsch Kreativ Interaktiv) and French (Le Français, c'est un atout). Our list also carries My English Course Book.

The slimmer books

  • Water Security, which some schools pair with an activity and project notebook.
  • Defence Studies.
  • Self-development and Art Appreciation.
  • Civil Defence and Traffic Safety (Nagari Sanrakshan va Vahatuk Suraksha), which is also on our Std 9 list.

Add the Science and Technology practical record book. Balbharati publishes official practical record books for Std 9 to 12, and its 2026-27 circular calls them mandatory.

What changes between the Std 8 and Std 9 books

Put a Std 8 bag next to a Std 9 bag and the difference isn't just weight. Several subjects change shape at once, and knowing that in advance takes some of the shock out of June.

  • Mathematics: one book becomes two. The Std 8 book already had Part 1 and Part 2 sections. Now they're separate books with separate notebooks and, in many schools, separate periods.
  • Science: General Science becomes Science and Technology. The Std 10 Science preface describes the progression plainly: simple science through the surroundings in the early years, a brief introduction to science in Std 6 to 8, and in Std 9 the links between science and technology.
  • Civics becomes Political Science. Std 8 Civics studied the Parliament, the Union Executive, the judiciary and state government. Std 9 Political Science turns to India's place in the world.
  • History moves forward in time. Std 8 ends with the formation of the State of Maharashtra. Std 9 starts in 1961.
  • New small subjects arrive. Water Security, Defence Studies, and Self-development and Art Appreciation all appear on the Std 9 list.
  • The language scheme firms up for the SSC, as explained below.

If your child is still in Std 8, the Std 8 books page covers the year before this one.

Maths splits into two books for the first time

Up to Std 8, Mathematics is a single book. Std 8 already divides its chapters into a Part 1 and a Part 2 section, but they sit between the same covers. In Std 9 they become two separate books, and they stay that way through the SSC.

Part I

Seven chapters: Sets, Real Numbers, Polynomials, Ratio and Proportion, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Financial Planning and Statistics. Part I is mostly algebra and number work. Sets will be new to most students. It covers types of sets, subsets, the universal set and Venn diagrams, and it trains the careful notation every later chapter needs.

Each chapter opens with a "Let's study" list of what's coming, and a few of those lists are worth noticing early. Real Numbers brings in surds and their rationalisation, a topic that confuses students who skim it. Financial Planning covers savings, investments and the computation of income tax, so a quick talk at home about how a salary slip or a bank deposit works makes the examples much less abstract. Statistics covers sub-divided and percentage bar diagrams, primary and secondary data, and grouped and ungrouped frequency distributions. Std 10 Statistics continues from there.

Part II

Nine chapters: Basic Concepts in Geometry, Parallel Lines, Triangles, Constructions of Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Circle, Co-ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry and Surface Area and Volume. This is the geometry book, and for many students it's the first time proofs with written reasons become routine. The very first chapter explains what a theorem is, a property proved by logical argument, and separates direct from indirect proofs. Read that section slowly. The rest of the book, and most of Std 10 Geometry, assumes you know what a proof must contain.

Getting used to two Maths books

The split changes how a week of maths feels. Many schools teach both books in parallel, with some periods for Part I and some for Part II. Students who are used to one book often fall behind in whichever part they like less without noticing. Three habits help:

  • Keep two notebooks, one per part, with the chapter name on the top of each page. Mixing them makes revision painful.
  • Track both at once. A simple list on the inside cover ("Part I: ch. 3 done; Part II: ch. 4 half done") shows at a glance which one is slipping.
  • Use the "Let's recall" sections. Both Std 9 Maths books open their topics with "Let's recall" boxes, about sixteen in Part I and seventeen in Part II. They point to exactly what you were supposed to bring from Std 8. If a recall box looks unfamiliar, fix that gap before starting the chapter.

Std 9 chapters that Std 10 builds on

This table puts chapter titles from the current Std 9 books next to the Std 10 chapters that depend on them. Use it in two ways. In Std 9, it tells you which chapters deserve extra care. At the start of Std 10, it tells you what to revise before a new chapter begins.

The geometry chain is the one to take most seriously. Std 10 Similarity starts with the ratio of areas of triangles and the basic proportionality theorem, and assumes you can already handle congruence, angle properties and triangle constructions without thinking. A student who rushed through Std 9 Triangles usually discovers it in the second week of Std 10.

The table only pairs chapters whose link is plain from the titles and the opening pages. Many smaller links exist too: the Std 9 Measurement of Matter and Acids, Bases and Salts chapters, for example, feed the chemistry in Std 10 Part 1.

One Science book this year, two next year

Std 9 Science and Technology is a single book of 18 chapters: Laws of Motion, Work and Energy, Current Electricity, Measurement of Matter, Acids, Bases and Salts, Classification of Plants, Energy Flow in an Ecosystem, Useful and Harmful Microbes, Environmental Management, Information Communication Technology, Reflection of Light, Study of Sound, Carbon: An Important Element, Substances in Common Use, Life Processes in Living Organisms, Heredity and Variation, Introduction to Biotechnology and Observing Space: Telescopes.

In Std 10 the same subject comes as two books, Part 1 (mostly physics and chemistry) and Part 2 (mostly biology and applied science). If you sort your Std 9 notes along the same line now, Std 10 will feel familiar from the first day. A simple way: mark each Std 9 chapter "P/C" or "B" in the contents page. Laws of Motion, Current Electricity, Reflection of Light and Carbon go with the future Part 1. Life Processes, Heredity, Microbes and Biotechnology go with Part 2.

The Std 9 Science book is also built around short prompts. It has around fifty "Use your brain power" boxes, about fifty "Try this" activities, close to thirty "Can you tell?" questions and around fifteen "Always remember" notes. Most students skip them. They shouldn't. These prompts are where the book checks understanding rather than recall, and they're good practice for the activity-based questions that come later.

History, Political Science and Geography in Std 9

The Std 9 History section is titled "India after Independence (1961 CE to 2000 CE)". It picks up where the Std 8 book's freedom-struggle story ends. Its ten chapters are Sources of History, India: Events after 1960, India's Internal Challenges, Economic Development, Education, Empowerment of Women and other Weaker Sections, Science and Technology, Industry and Trade, and two chapters titled Changing Life. Then Std 10 changes the angle completely, from events to how history is written and used. So Std 9 is your last year of a chronological history book, and a good time to get comfortable with timelines.

The Political Science section is where Civics becomes Political Science. Its six chapters look outward: Post World War Political Developments, India's Foreign Policy, India's Defence System, The United Nations, India and Other Countries, and International Problems. Reading the newspaper's international page for ten minutes a day helps more here than any guide.

Geography has twelve chapters: Distributional Maps, Endogenetic Movements, Exogenetic Processes Part 1 and Part 2, Precipitation, The Properties of Sea Water, International Date Line, Introduction to Economics, Trade, Urbanisation, Transport and Communication, and Tourism. It ends with a glossary, which is handy for the many technical terms. The first chapter, Distributional Maps, is practical: you'll draw and read maps that show spread and density, and that skill comes back in Std 10.

Language choices you lock in now

Std 9 is usually when the language scheme you'll take into the SSC gets settled: which language is your first, second and third, and whether you take the full or the composite option for Hindi or Sanskrit. Schools generally expect students to keep the same scheme through Std 10, so changing later means catching up on a year of a different book. Talk it through before June, not after.

  • Full or composite. Lokbharati and Sanskritam Amod are the full courses. Lokvani and Sanskritam Anand belong to the composite option. The two books in each pair differ, so a sibling's book from the other option won't do.
  • Marathi as an additional language. Students in other mediums usually study Marathi from Aksharbharati or Antarbharati. Check which one your school has chosen.
  • Foreign languages. German and French books appear on our Std 9 list, but only some schools offer them. If you choose one, make sure the school will offer it in Std 10 too.
  • Semi-English. There are no separate semi-English books. You read Maths and Science from the English-medium books and the other subjects from your regional-medium books, so buy two mediums.

Inside the Std 9 English Kumarbharati

English Kumarbharati for Std 9 opens with a "Let's Begin!" section, where one activity asks students to interview their teacher. Then come four units and a language study section at the end. Unit One has "Life", a synopsis of The Swiss Family Robinson, and "The Necklace". Unit Two includes "Invictus", "A True Story of Sea Turtles", "Somebody's Mother", "The Fall of Troy" and "Autumn". Unit Three has "Silver", "Reading Works of Art", "The Road Not Taken" and "How the First Letter was Written", and Unit Four ends with "The Storyteller", "Intellectual Rubbish", "My Financial Career" and "Tansen". The mix of poems, stories, humour and essays is deliberate, and the activities after each piece are as important as the reading. Do them in writing, not just in your head.

Whatever you choose, it's worth asking two questions at school: will the same combination run in Std 10, and which exact book titles does it use? A five-minute conversation in June saves a lot of confusion later.

2026-27: the final year of these Std 9 books

The current Std 9 books date from 2017. The Science, History and Political Science, and English Kumarbharati books all show a 2017 first edition, and most copies are later reprints. Maharashtra is moving to a new NEP-based curriculum class by class, and the state's schedule puts Std 9 in the 2027-28 group, along with Std 5, 7 and 11. Balbharati has said 2026-27 is the last year for the current Std 9 books. In 2026 Balbharati's director said work had begun on the new syllabus for Std 5, 7, 9 and 11. Then in October 2026 the state board decided it would itself frame the curriculum and prepare textbooks for Std 9 to 12, starting with Std 9 and 11 for 2027-28, with Balbharati printing them.

What it means for your family

  • In Std 9 now (2026-27)? Nothing changes for you. You finish Std 9 on the current books, and on the present schedule you'll take Std 10 in 2027-28 on the current Std 10 books, which change only in 2028-29.
  • Younger sibling entering Std 9 in June 2027? Don't count on this year's books for them. On the present schedule they'll get new Std 9 books, so the hand-me-down plan probably won't work for Std 9.
  • Buying second-hand Std 9 books? Fine for 2026-27. After that, wait for the official announcement before buying any.
  • Selling or donating this year's set? Do it within this academic year, while students still need them. Old Std 9 books will be far less useful from June 2027.

Study habits to build with the Std 9 books

Since there's no board exam this year, Std 9 is the safest time to practise the habits that Std 10 will need every day.

  1. Do the textbook exercises first, yourself. Before you open any solution or guide, try every exercise in the book. Check your answers afterwards. Our Maharashtra Board solutions follow the textbook exercises chapter by chapter, which makes checking quick.
  2. Keep a mistake log. One page per subject. Each time you get something wrong, write the chapter, the question and the reason in one line. By Std 10 you'll have a personal list of weak spots that no guide can give you.
  3. Draw from memory. After each Science chapter, close the book and draw its main diagram. After each Geometry chapter, redraw one theorem's figure and write its proof.
  4. Read the "Let's recall" and "Can you tell?" prompts aloud. If you can't answer one, that's a gap from an earlier class. Fix it now, while it's still small.
  5. Revise weekly, not monthly. Fifteen minutes on Saturday going over the week's chapters keeps the year from piling up into a pre-exam rush.
  6. Finish the textbook before buying extra books. If you want more practice later, see how textbook chapters turn into exam questions in the previous years' papers.

For the general steps to download any book from the official e-book library, see our Maharashtra Board books page. When you move up next June, the Std 10 books page walks through the SSC-year set.

A sample week with the Std 9 books

Here's one way to spread self-study across a school week so that no book is left untouched for long. Adjust it to your timetable and tuition hours. The point is the rotation, not the exact slots.

DayAbout 40 minutesAbout 20 minutes
MondayMaths Part I: the day's exerciseLanguage book: read the current lesson aloud
TuesdayScience and Technology: reread the chapter, attempt "Use your brain power" boxesMaths Part II: one figure and proof from memory
WednesdayMaths Part II: the day's exerciseHistory: add the week's events to a timeline
ThursdayGeography: chapter reading plus one mapScience: one diagram from memory
FridayScience and Technology: end-of-chapter exercisePolitical Science: one news item linked to the chapter
SaturdayWeekly review of all books, mistake log, any pending practical write-up

Students who follow something like this rarely need a big catch-up before the term exams, because no subject has gone untouched for more than a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many books are there in Std 9 Maharashtra Board?

A typical student has seven core textbooks: Maths Part I and Part II, Science and Technology, History and Political Science, Geography, and two language books. Add a third language if your scheme has one, the smaller books such as Water Security and Defence Studies, and the Science practical record book.

Part I has Sets, Real Numbers, Polynomials, Ratio and Proportion, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Financial Planning and Statistics. Part II has Basic Concepts in Geometry, Parallel Lines, Triangles, Constructions of Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Circle, Co-ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry and Surface Area and Volume.

Are the Std 9 books changing?

Yes. Balbharati has said 2026-27 is the last year of the current Std 9 books, and the state's schedule brings in a new NEP-based Std 9 curriculum in 2027-28. Wait for the official circular for the new titles.

Which is the biggest book in the Std 9 set?

Science and Technology, at about 228 pages in the official PDF including covers. It holds all 18 science chapters for the year, which Std 10 later spreads across two books.

Can my younger sibling use my Std 9 books next year?

Probably not, if they enter Std 9 in June 2027, because new Std 9 books are scheduled for that year. Within 2026-27, second-hand copies of the current books are fine.

Will I get new books in Std 10 too?

If you're in Std 9 in 2026-27, on the current schedule you'll take Std 10 in 2027-28 on the existing Std 10 books. New Std 10 books are planned for 2028-29.

Which Std 9 chapters matter most for Std 10?

In Maths, Triangles, Circle, Co-ordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Polynomials and Surface Area and Volume. In Science, Current Electricity, Reflection of Light, Carbon: An Important Element, Heredity and Variation, and Life Processes in Living Organisms.

Is Std 9 History the same as Std 10 History?

No. Std 9 History covers India after Independence, from 1961 to 2000, in chronological chapters. Std 10 History is about how history is written and applied, with chapters on historiography, mass media, sports, tourism and heritage management.

What is the difference between Lokbharati and Lokvani?

Both are Std 9 Hindi books. Lokbharati is for the full Hindi course and Lokvani for the composite option. Your school's language scheme decides which one you need.

Do semi-English students need different books?

There are no separate semi-English books. Semi-English students use the English-medium Maths Part I, Maths Part II and Science and Technology books and regional-medium books for the other subjects.

Is the practical record book needed in Std 9?

Yes. Balbharati publishes official practical record books for Std 9 to 12, and its 2026-27 circular calls them mandatory. It also says schools shouldn't make students buy private practical notebooks instead.
