Why Std 11 books are a different kind of book set
The current Std 11 textbooks were introduced in 2019-20. Their front pages say so: the Coordination Committee approved them at its meeting on 20 June 2019, to be implemented from the academic year 2019-20. Each one is a single-subject book written for one stream, unlike the combined Science and Technology book of Std 10.
Three things decide which books you need:
- Your stream: Science, Commerce or Arts.
- Your subject combination: the optional subject and second language your junior college offers and you choose.
- Your medium: Science and Maths books are in English, while many Arts and Commerce books also come in Marathi.
Most families get this wrong in the same way. They buy a "Std 11 Science set" from a shop in May, before the college has confirmed the subject combination, and end up with a Biology book their child doesn't take, or the wrong Maths.
Matching the book set to your stream and subjects
Your junior college admission fixes your subjects, not your SSC result. A seat in Science at one college may mean Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology; at another, it may mean Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Information Technology, or a bifocal subject. Commerce colleges differ on whether they offer Maths or a subject such as Co-operation. Arts colleges vary the most.
So before you buy, get three answers from the college:
- Which four or five subjects are in my combination?
- Which second language am I taking, and is it the same language I studied in Std 10?
- Which medium are the lectures in, for each subject?
Only four books are common to every stream: English Yuvakbharati, Environment Education and Water Security, Health and Physical Education, and a second-language book. You can safely buy the first three as soon as you know you're going to junior college.
What's new compared with Std 10 books
The jump from Std 10 to Std 11 is bigger than any earlier one. Here is what students notice first.
| In Std 10 | In Std 11 |
|---|---|
| Science and Technology Part 1 and Part 2, for everyone | Separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology books, for Science students only |
| Mathematics Part I (Algebra) and Part II (Geometry) | Mathematics and Statistics Part I and Part II, in a Science-Arts version and a Commerce version |
| History and Political Science, Geography, for everyone | Separate History, Political Science, Geography, Economics and other books, chosen by stream |
| English Kumarbharati | English Yuvakbharati, with a section on drama |
| Books in the medium of your school | Science and Maths books in English medium |
More depth, more pages
The Std 11 books cover more ground per subject. The official PDF of Std 11 Physics runs to 268 pages and Chemistry to 284, for one subject each. Chapters are longer, examples are worked in fewer steps, and exercises expect you to connect ideas from earlier chapters.
Physics shows the change clearly. Its second chapter, "Mathematical Methods", teaches vectors and the basics of calculus before the physics chapters use them. Std 10 never asked for this. Students who skim it struggle in motion in a plane and laws of motion straight afterwards.
English-medium science
Balbharati's e-book library lists the Std 11 Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths books in English medium only. For a student who studied Science in Marathi or another language until Std 10, that's a real adjustment. The concepts are often familiar; the vocabulary isn't. "Refraction", "valency" and "osmosis" may be words you knew only as अपवर्तन, संयुजा and परासरण.
The practical fix is a two-column glossary notebook: English term on the left, the term you learnt in Std 10 on the right. Ten minutes a day for the first month is enough to stop the language from slowing down the science.
Practical work and journals
Std 11 also introduces regular journals. The Std 11 Maths books include a list of specimen practical problems for each chapter. Their prefaces ask students to complete them under the teacher's guidance and to keep a journal that the teacher assesses. Science subjects use Balbharati's Practical Notebook cum Journal, which, according to Balbharati, follows the approved syllabus and includes all practicals in the evaluation scheme, along with questions for the oral exam.
Science stream books
| Book | Chapters | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 14 | Units and measurements, mathematical methods, motion in a plane, laws of motion, gravitation, mechanical and thermal properties of matter, sound, optics, electrostatics, electric current, magnetism, electromagnetic waves and communication, semiconductors |
| Chemistry | 16 | Basic concepts, analytical chemistry and techniques, atomic structure, bonding, redox, the periodic table, groups 1, 2, 13, 14 and 15, states of matter, adsorption and colloids, equilibrium, nuclear chemistry, basic organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, chemistry in everyday life |
| Biology | 16 | The living world and classification, plant and animal kingdoms, cell structure, biomolecules, cell division, plant and animal tissues, flowering-plant morphology, the cockroach as a study animal, photosynthesis, respiration, human nutrition, excretion, skeleton and movement |
| Maths and Statistics (Arts and Science) Part I | 9 | Angle measurement, trigonometry I and II, determinants and matrices, straight line, circle, conic sections, measures of dispersion, probability |
| Maths and Statistics (Arts and Science) Part II | 9 | Complex numbers, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, induction and the binomial theorem, sets and relations, functions, limits, continuity, differentiation |
How the three Science books feel different
Physics is the most mathematical of the three, and its early chapters on measurement, vectors and motion are the tools for the rest of the book. Chemistry opens with two chapters most students haven't met before, on analytical chemistry and basic analytical techniques, before moving to atomic structure and bonding. Its last three chapters are the first real taste of organic chemistry. Biology starts with classification: the living world, systematics, and the plant and animal kingdoms. These chapters are full of names and groups, so steady weekly revision works far better than cramming. Later chapters on tissues, the cockroach as a study animal, and human physiology lean heavily on diagrams.
Science students with Biology and Maths together, often called PCMB, carry the heaviest bag in junior college: five subject books plus the common ones. Students who drop Biology or Maths usually take Information Technology, Geology or a bifocal subject in its place, depending on what the college offers.
Geology at Std 11 is called The Earth Matters. It covers an introduction to geology, surface processes and landforms, rock-forming processes, mineralogy, the geology of Maharashtra, and practical exercises.
Commerce stream books
| Book | Chapters | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Book-Keeping and Accountancy | 10 | Introduction and double-entry fundamentals, journal, ledger, subsidiary books, bank reconciliation, depreciation, rectification of errors, final accounts of a proprietary concern, single entry system |
| Organisation of Commerce and Management | 8 | Commerce and business, trade, small-scale industry, forms of business organisation, institutes supporting business, business environment, introduction to management |
| Secretarial Practice | 12 | The secretary, joint stock companies, company formation and its documents, members, directors and key managerial personnel, company meetings, business communication and correspondence |
| Economics | 10 | Basic concepts, money, partition values, the economy of Maharashtra, rural development, population, unemployment, poverty, economic policy since 1991, economic planning |
| Maths and Statistics (Commerce) Part I | 9 | Sets and relations, functions, complex numbers, sequences and series, locus and straight line, determinants, limits, continuity, differentiation |
| Maths and Statistics (Commerce) Part II | 9 | Partition values, dispersion, skewness, bivariate frequency distribution and chi-square, correlation, permutations and combinations, probability, linear inequations, commercial mathematics |
Commerce students who did well in Std 10 Maths sometimes assume Book-Keeping will be easy. It isn't hard, but it's new: no one has done a journal entry before Std 11. The first four chapters, from double-entry basics to the ledger, are the alphabet of the subject. Everything in Std 12 assumes them.
The Std 11 Economics book has a chapter on the economy of Maharashtra, which most students find unexpectedly useful for general knowledge.
Arts stream books
| Book | Chapters | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| History | 16 | Early India from the first farmers and cities through the Vedic, Mauryan and post-Mauryan periods, south Indian kingdoms, contacts with Iran, China and Southeast Asia, the Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagar, the Mughals, and the Maratha period from Swarajya to empire |
| Political Science | 10 | The state, liberty and rights, equality and justice, constitutional government, representation, the judiciary, public and development administration, the world since 1945 |
| Geography | 9 + practicals | Earth movements, weathering, agents of erosion, climatic regions, global climate change, ocean resources, the Indian Ocean, biomes, disaster management |
| Sociology | 8 | Introduction to sociology, Western and Indian sociologists, basic concepts, social institutions, culture, socialisation, stratification, social change |
| Psychology | 8 | The story and branches of psychology, the self, human development, health and normality, stress, the nervous system, memory |
| Logic | 7 | The nature of logic and of propositions, decision procedure, method of deduction, inductive inference, fallacies, applications |
| Defence Studies | 6 | Key concepts, geopolitics, military history, defence economics, science and technology in national security, India's higher defence organisation |
The Std 11 list also includes Philosophy, Education, Child Development, Home Management, Textiles, Food Science and Technology, History of Art and Appreciation, History and Development of Indian Music, and Library and Information Science. That last book ends with a workbook on Koha, the open-source library software. Many of these have Marathi-medium editions, and a few, such as Library and Information Science, are listed only in Marathi.
Arts students who choose Maths take the Arts and Science Maths books, the same ones Science students use.
Information Technology and bifocal options
Std 11 has one Information Technology book for all streams. It covers the basics of IT, databases, web design in HTML5, cyber law, LibreOffice, client-side JavaScript, the GNU Khata accounting package, digital content creation with GIMP and Inkscape, PostgreSQL and the Linux operating system. In Std 12 the subject splits into separate Science, Commerce and Arts books, so the Std 11 book is the only one you'll share with friends in other streams.
Bifocal courses are offered by some Science junior colleges as vocational subjects, with syllabi published separately by the board. Their books aren't part of the Balbharati list shown here. If you're admitted to a bifocal seat, ask the college for its book and journal list before buying anything for that subject.
Language and compulsory graded books
English Yuvakbharati
The Std 11 English Yuvakbharati, first published in 2019, has six prose lessons, six poems, a writing-skills section and a section on drama. The prose includes "Being Neighborly", "On to the Summit", "The Call of the Soil" and "Pillars of Democracy". Among the poems are "Cherry Tree", "The Sower", "There is Another Sky" and Wordsworth's "Upon Westminster Bridge". The preface describes the drama section as a mix of extracts with historical, socio-cultural and comic themes.
Second language
Marathi and Hindi students use Marathi Yuvakbharati or Hindi Yuvakbharati. The Marathi book adds practical units on anchoring, proofreading, translation, blog writing and radio jockeying. Other options include Sanskrit Aalhad, foreign-language Part 1 books (French Rencontres, German Sprachlotsen 1, Japanese Haru-1, Spanish Aventuras, Russian Druzhba, and Chinese), and classical languages such as Pali (Pali Aloko), Ardhamagadhi, Maharashtri Prakrit, Persian and Arabic. A foreign language starts from Part 1 here and continues with Part 2 in Std 12, so pick one you'll keep for both years.
Graded books
| Book | What the Std 11 edition covers |
|---|---|
| Environment Education and Water Security | Environment and sustainable development, ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resources, disasters |
| Health and Physical Education | Physical fitness, obesity, diet, yoga and mudra, doping, injury management, technology in sport, sports careers, games and competitions |
Both are graded rather than added to your percentage, but both are compulsory for every stream.
2026-27: the final year of the current Std 11 books
This matters if you're buying second-hand. Balbharati's circular for 2026-27, reported by the Hindustan Times in May 2026, says this is the final year for the existing Std 11 textbooks, and it advised schools and booksellers to buy them only as needed. In a Times of India report, the state board's chairperson said Std 11 is scheduled to adopt a revised curriculum in 2027-28, with Std 12 following in 2028-29. The state board will frame the new Std 9 to 12 curriculum and prepare the textbooks, with Balbharati printing them.
What this means in practice:
- Std 11 students in 2026-27 can use second-hand copies freely. The content is the same 2019-20 edition.
- Don't pass these books down to a younger sibling who enters Std 11 in June 2027 without checking. That batch is expected to get new books.
- Don't sell your Std 11 books after the year-end exam. You'll still use the current Std 12 books in 2027-28, and they build directly on these.
- Booksellers may stock fewer copies late in the year, since they've been told to order only as needed. Buy early if you want a new copy.
Buying books around the FYJC admission timeline
Since 2025-26, Std 11 admission across Maharashtra has run through one online centralised process at mahafyjcadmissions.in. In 2026, students could fill Part 1 of the form from 10 April. The SSC result came on 8 May, the Round 1 college allotment list was declared on 26 May, and special rounds were still running in late September. So two students in the same class can start Std 11 four months apart.
| Stage | What to buy |
|---|---|
| Before allotment (April to May) | Nothing stream-specific. You may download PDFs to read ahead. |
| After your college and stream are confirmed | English Yuvakbharati, Environment Education and Water Security, Health and Physical Education |
| After the college gives your subject combination | Core stream books, the correct Maths version and both parts, the second language |
| When practicals begin | Balbharati practical journals for each Science subject |
| Late admission in a special round | Everything at once; then borrow a classmate's notes for missed chapters |
If you change college in a later round, your stream may stay the same but the subject combination can change. Keep the receipt, and don't write in a book until you're sure you'll keep the seat.
Which Std 11 chapters Std 12 builds on
Std 11 isn't a break year. Std 12 chapters regularly assume Std 11 chapters, and the MHT-CET syllabus for 2026 gives Std 11 about 20% of the weightage, through a named list of Std 11 chapters.
| Subject | Std 11 chapter | Std 12 chapter that uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | Mathematical Methods; Laws of Motion | Rotational Dynamics and almost every numerical chapter |
| Physics | Sound; Optics | Superposition of Waves; Wave Optics |
| Physics | Electrostatics; Electric Current Through Conductors; Magnetism | Electrostatics; Current Electricity; Magnetic Materials |
| Physics | Semiconductors | Semiconductor Devices |
| Maths (Arts and Science) | Trigonometry I and II; Straight Line | Trigonometric Functions; Pair of Straight Lines |
| Maths (Arts and Science) | Determinants and Matrices | Matrices |
| Maths (Arts and Science) | Limits; Continuity; Differentiation | Differentiation, integration and differential equations |
| Maths (Arts and Science) | Probability | Probability Distributions; Binomial Distribution |
| Chemistry | Chemical Equilibrium | Ionic Equilibria |
| Chemistry | Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry; Hydrocarbons | The organic chapters, from halogen derivatives to amines |
| Book-Keeping | Journal, ledger and final accounts | Partnership final accounts and everything after it |
The CET Cell's Std 11 list for 2026 includes, for Physics: vectors, error analysis, motion in a plane, laws of motion, gravitation, thermal properties of matter, sound, optics, electrostatics and semiconductors. For Mathematics it names trigonometry II, straight line, circle, probability, complex numbers, permutations and combinations, functions, limits, continuity and conic sections. If you're aiming for MHT-CET, mark these chapters in your books now.
How to read denser junior-college textbooks
A Std 11 textbook chapter can't be read like a Std 10 one, quickly and once. Try these habits instead.
- Read with a pen and rough paper. In Physics, Chemistry and Maths, solved examples skip steps. Write out every missing step until the example makes sense.
- Read before the lecture, not after. Ten minutes skimming the headings and figures the night before turns a confusing lecture into a familiar one.
- Use the chapter order the book gives. The Physics preface asks students to follow the chapters strictly in order, because units are introduced in a graded way.
- Scan the QR codes. Balbharati prints them in the books; according to the prefaces, they link to extra information, chapter abstracts and practice questions through the DIKSHA app.
- Make a definitions page per chapter. Junior-college exams reward precise wording. Copy definitions exactly as the book gives them.
- For Commerce, practise formats. Draw a blank journal, ledger and final-accounts format until you can do it from memory.
- For Arts, read twice. First for the story, then for the structure: causes, events, results. Long History and Political Science chapters become manageable once you see the frame.
When you're stuck on an exercise, our chapter-wise solutions show worked answers. Try the question yourself first.
A first-month plan for Std 11
The first four weeks set the pace for both junior-college years. A simple plan:
- Week 1: get the right books. Confirm your subject combination, buy the books and journals, and download the PDFs (see our Maharashtra Board books page for the download steps). Start the English-to-mother-tongue glossary if your Science or Maths is moving to English.
- Week 2: read the first chapter of every book. Science students should finish Physics "Units and Measurements" and start "Mathematical Methods". Commerce students should be comfortable with double entry. Arts students should read the opening History chapter on the first farmers end to end.
- Week 3: start the journals. Write up the first practicals and Maths practical problems on the day they're done. Set up a folder for Environment Education project work.
- Week 4: first self-test. Without the book, write a one-page summary of each chapter covered so far. Reopen the book and mark what you missed. Those gaps are your reading list for week 5.
If you were admitted in a later round and joined late, compress weeks 1 and 2 into a single week, and ask the subject teacher which chapters have been covered.
When you finish Std 11, your next set is on the Std 12 books page.
Common Std 11 book mistakes
- Buying a shop's "Science set" before admission. Sets often bundle Biology and Maths together, and your combination may include only one.
- Picking up the Std 12 book by mistake. Std 11 and Std 12 books share titles and cover styles. The title page says "Standard XI" or "Standard Eleven".
- Buying only Part I of Maths. Both parts are taught from the first weeks.
- Treating the graded books as optional. Environment Education and Health and Physical Education are compulsory, even though they don't add to your percentage.
- Leaving the journal for later. Writing ten practicals in one weekend before submission is miserable, and teachers can tell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which books are common to all Std 11 streams?
English Yuvakbharati, a second-language book, Environment Education and Water Security, and Health and Physical Education. Everything else depends on your stream and subject combination.
When should I buy my Std 11 books?
Buy the common books once your stream is confirmed, and the stream books only after the college gives you your subject combination. Buying a full set before admission often means buying the wrong Maths or an extra subject.
Are the Std 11 books changing?
The current books continue in 2026-27, which Balbharati has announced as their final year. According to the state board, Std 11 is scheduled for a revised curriculum in 2027-28.
Can I buy second-hand Std 11 books?
Yes, for 2026-27. They are the same 2019-20 edition. A student entering Std 11 in June 2027 should wait for the new books instead.
Are Std 11 Science books available in Marathi?
Balbharati's library lists the Std 11 Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths books in English medium. Many Arts and Commerce books, such as History, Geography, Economics and Book-Keeping, also have Marathi editions.
Which Maths book does a Commerce student need?
Mathematics and Statistics (Commerce) Part I and Part II. Science students, and Arts students who take Maths, use the Arts and Science version. Check the bracket on the cover.
Should I keep my Std 11 books after the exam?
Yes. Std 12 chapters build on them, and the MHT-CET syllabus gives about 20% of its weightage to a named list of Std 11 chapters.
How is the Std 11 Physics book different from Std 10 Science?
It is a separate book of 14 chapters for one subject, written in English medium, and it begins with units and measurements and a chapter on mathematical methods such as vectors and basic calculus.
Is Information Technology the same for every stream?
In Std 11, yes: one book covers all streams. In Std 12 it splits into separate Science, Commerce and Arts books.
Do I still need my Std 10 books?
Keep the Std 10 Maths and Science books for the first term. Std 11 chapters such as trigonometry, straight line and atomic structure start from where Std 10 left off, and a quick look back is often faster than asking.
I got admission in a late round. How do I catch up?
Buy the full set at once, ask each teacher which chapters are done, and read the first two chapters of every subject in your first week. The opening chapters are the ones later lessons depend on most.
